First introduced by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) in 1957,\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>water auditing<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>proposed tracking<\/span>\u00a0water loss as a percentage of estimated losses over the volume of water supplied<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>At that time, the\u00a0<\/span>terms\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>unaccounted-for-water<\/span>“<\/span>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>unaccounted-for-percentage<\/span>“<\/span>\u00a0were widely adopted by water utilities in response to th<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>1957<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>AWWA guidance<\/span>;
