The\u00a0Level of Service\u00a0component\u00a0drives every part of Asset Management. It is the foundation for which all components are considered.\u00a0Utilities, ask yourselves, \u201cWhat do I need to do to provide the safest, most reliable clean drinking water to my community?\u201d\u00a0The answers guide the rest of your planning.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Level\u00a0of Service (LoS) defines the\u00a0types and amounts of\u00a0service the system wants their assets to provide to their customers\u00a0relative\u00a0to the capabilities and limitations of the assets. Additionally,\u00a0Level of\u00a0Service\u00a0indicates\u00a0how a system will\u00a0operate\u00a0and maintain its assets to meet customer expectations. The level of service provided depends on the purpose of the system, how it\u00a0is operated\u00a0and maintained,\u00a0and the environmental factors\u00a0impacting\u00a0the system.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater systems have levels of service specific to the outcomes desired by the customers (e.g., safe, reliable delivery of drinking water, consistent removal of wastewater treated and\u00a0disposed of\u00a0in an environmentally protective manner, or stormwater handling that prevents flooding and protects the waterways).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Developing a mission statement for your community can serve as a starting point for understanding\u00a0community needs\u00a0and\u00a0can\u00a0assist\u00a0with\u00a0determining\u00a0the\u00a0quality of services a utility\u00a0seeks\u00a0to provide. Small communities may not need a formal mission statement; however, a guiding statement\u00a0can\u00a0provide\u00a0direction for\u00a0daily operations and maintenance as well as support for future planning.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
