The impacts of one critical asset failing in those areas will have heightened impact due to the proximity to other critical assets, including those of another asset type.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">GIS<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0is a useful tool to spatially\u00a0identify\u00a0high-concentration locations of critical assets, and this can then be factored into the prioritization framework for each asset type.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Visualizing criticality scores<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0with a matrix is also a useful tool, especially when discussing the criticality of assets with stakeholders who were not part of the process. Additionally, systems can\u00a0pick\u00a0a threshold criticality score which they can use to define which assets are eligible for funding for inspection\u00a0or\u00a0repair or replacement projects. When selecting a threshold score,\u00a0staff\u00a0should pay close\u00a0attention\u00a0to the availability of condition data and the distribution of risks. If\u00a0additional\u00a0data becomes available, especially condition data, these risk score thresholds should be re-evaluated. The criticality score, along with the asset\u2019s condition rating and estimate of useful life, should be used to prioritize assets for repair, replacement, or upgrade. The main point is that there is not a \u201cright\u201d response for each asset. Each case must be considered individually to\u00a0determine\u00a0the correct response for the given situation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Risk mitigation options can be more complex and harder to implement for green assets because they are often owned,\u00a0managed\u00a0or accessed by third parties. Gray assets such as pipes are owned and managed by a\u00a0utility, and\u00a0they\u00a0have\u00a0direct control over the mitigation options (i.e., repair, replacement,\u00a0rehabilitation\u00a0etc.). Green assets, such as a green roof or a forest, are\u00a0likely not\u00a0owned by the system and may involve several outside entities to implement any mitigation strategies.
