Once a criticality score has been assigned to each asset, the severity of the risk can be visualized in a matrix. Plotting the criticality score on a graph with probability of failure on\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the X or horizontal<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>axis and consequence of failure on the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Y or vertical<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>axis is the easiest\u00a0<\/span><\/span>approach.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Additionally, your rating structure for both probability and consequence of failure can be labeled on each axis.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Areas of the matrix are often color-coded to increase the visual impact of the criticality of assets. Reading the chart<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Red Zone:<\/strong> This area is where assets\u00a0with high criticality scores\u00a0are. The\u00a0are the highest priority\u00a0and\u00a0should be targeted for early replacement or rehabilitation, prior to the asset failing. These assets represent events the system does not want to occur,\u00a0and it is worth sacrificing some asset life to prevent\u00a0failure.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Orange Zone:\u00a0<\/strong>This area is where assets with either high probability or high consequence of failure are. These assets are often\u00a0critical but\u00a0may be able to last through additional planning for repair or replacement.\u00a0It is imperative to monitor and plan for assets in the orange zone as they can quickly move into the red\u00a0zone.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yellow\u00a0Zone:<\/strong> Assets in this area\u00a0should be monitored to determine when the probability of failure increases or when a potential failure may occur.\u00a0Assets along the yellow zone may have a range of criticality scores that feature\u00a0high\u00a0PoF or CoF rankings, but their overall criticality score is moderate.\u00a0Some of these assets may be eligible for a run to failure\u00a0strategy.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Green Zone:<\/strong>\u00a0This area is where assets with low probability and low consequence of failure are. These assets may be ideal\u00a0to\u00a0run to failure to get maximum life out of the asset. Run to failure is a management strategy that can be used\u00a0when appropriate\u00a0because the consequences of\u00a0failure\u00a0are low. This management style requires that the utility be prepared to\u00a0act\u00a0when the asset does fail (perhaps by having spare parts on hand or ensuring proper operator training) but does not require\u00a0acting\u00a0prior to the failure.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The matrix makes it easy to compare assets and determine which of the assets are most critical. This is a useful tool for communicating asset risk to board members or community members who may not understand what a particular criticality score means.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Below are three other examples of ways to\u00a0represent\u00a0criticality\u00a0scores\u00a0visually. These can be adjusted to fit your\u00a0utility\u2019s\u00a0needs and\u00a0may help\u00a0effectively communicate risk internally and with external stakeholders. These examples are from a wastewater system assessing one of their pump stations. Asset\u00a0ID\u2019s\u00a0have been removed for anonymity.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
