The simplest approach is to gather people who have current or historical knowledge of the assets in a room. The group can then select a condition rating system (0 through 5, A through F, Excellent through Unacceptable, etc.). The group then considers what would constitute an asset in each of the categories. For example, if a 1 through 5 rating system is being used, the group should decide what a \u201c1\u201d means and what a \u201c5\u201d means in terms of asset condition and then develop 2, 3, and 4 to be between these boundaries.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">When defining asset\u00a0conditions, consider the factors that might cause the asset to change over time. Each asset in the pilot project is\u00a0rated\u00a0based on condition, and then everyone can examine the results to\u00a0determine\u00a0whether they make sense and if the selected\u00a0system\u00a0is ideal. If needed,\u00a0you can revise\u00a0the condition rating system\u00a0and repeat the pilot.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Once the condition rating system is selected,\u00a0use it\u00a0consistently throughout the\u00a0utility. This approach relies on the best information\u00a0available but\u00a0does not require systems to gather\u00a0additional\u00a0data to rate the assets. Any condition rating system that is understood by\u00a0utility staff\u00a0and is consistently applied is acceptable.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Below are examples of asset\u00a0rating systems.
