Environmental Finance Center (SW EFC), formerly called the New Mexico Environmental Finance Center, has been in business within a university setting since 1992.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a public service entity within the University of New Mexico School of Engineering\u2019s Center for Water and the Environment.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> dedicated to assisting state, local, and tribal governments as well as the private sector with the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">technical, managerial, and financial aspects of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">environmental service delivery and environmental compliance.\u00a0 Since its inception the SW EFC has worked with water and wastewater <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">entities<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">all across<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the country in a variety of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">capacities<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> including training and direct technical assistance<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">are able to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> comprehens<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ively address water and wastewa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ter needs, but we have <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">particular strengths<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in the following areas: asset <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mana<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">g<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ement<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">water loss auditing and control, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">environmental compliance<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, tribal drinking water,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> water system partnerships, water and wastewater funding,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> green infrastructure, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">GIS <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mapping,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and energy the utility rather than residing solely with an outside entity.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> strive<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to work <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the entities we serve rather than <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the entities we serve.\u00a0 We<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> want our partners to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> be an integral part of projects so they can improve their internal capabilities for long-term sustainability and resilience.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span broad<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> experience<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and the fact that we work at all levels, federal, regional, state, and local<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> gives us <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a thorough understanding of the issues <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">water and wastewater utilities<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> currently face,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the gaps in <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">available programs and resources.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We address<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> these gaps by <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">pla<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> strong emphasis on technical information transfer at all levels.\u00a0 This transfer occurs <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">through <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the many trainings <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">conduct<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> both in person and remotely via webinars or <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">virtual <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">meetings;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> presentations <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we give <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at regional, national, and international <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">conferences;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> work groups<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> we participate in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">; and the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">many<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> free<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> resources, such as reports, guidebooks, and tools<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> first <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">f a group of EFCs established at universities across the country by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).\u00a0 The SW EFC<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> initially focused on the EPA Region 6 states.\u00a0 However, over the past <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">28<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> years, we have expanded our reach significantly and between <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">all of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> our projects and other activities, such as conferences, we have worked in one way or another in every state in the nation and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">all of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the US Territories.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span member of the Environmental Finance Center Network (EFCN) which includes 1<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> other university or non-profit-based centers, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">including: the <a href=\"https:\/\/neefc.org\/\">University of Southern Maine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/efc.syr.edu\/\">Syracuse University<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efc.umd.edu\/\">University of Maryland<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/efc.sog.unc.edu\/\">University of North Carolina<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/gleic.org\/\">Michigan Technological University<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wichita.edu\/academics\/fairmount_college_of_liberal_arts_and_sciences\/hugowall\/efc\/\">Wichita State University<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcac.org\/environmental\/environmental-finance-center\/\">Rural Community Assistance Corporation (Region 10)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/efc.nrwa.org\/\">Rural Water Association (Region 8)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efc.csus.edu\/\">Sacramento State University<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthisland.org\/\">Earth Island Institute<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We work both individually on our own projects and collaboratively with the various centers within the EFCN.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The affiliation with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> these other centers is a tremendous resource as it greatly increases the capacity of all of us to be able to serve the nation.<\/span><span
