They are built into slopes, usually steep slopes, to catch and retain soils. They can easily be vegetated.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"row detail-margins\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\"><strong>O&amp;M Required <\/strong> : Gabions should be inspected after major storms. Check for signs of undercutting, scour and instability. Check wire annually for rust or wear and replace when necessary.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"row detail-margins\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\"><strong>Design Considerations <\/strong> : A gabion must be professionally designed and consider sliding, overturning and settlement. Gabion&#8217;s can be installed on slopes as well as under water. It is important to keep the bottom of the gabion level. Unlike concrete structures, gabions can settle and flex under various environmental conditions. They can easily be fitted and adapted around pipes and other structures. They can also be used on projects with difficult terrain.
